One of our newest Forum Moderators (at the time of this writing) Pat, was approached by members of his family concerning paranormal activity in their home. Pat has been semi-involved with CAPI since 2003 when he asked us to visit Nordegg. In 2005, Pat decided to take his interest in the paranormal a few steps further by signing up for a basic paranormal investigation course he found on the internet. When he needed to perform a "hands-on" investigation to complete this course, he asked Tom to evaluate what he learned. Tom was extremely impressed, not by what Pat had learned from the very basic information he received, but by what Pat instinctively brought to the investigation. Pat's methodology is impeccable. It was during this evaluative investigation at the home of Pat's family member that Tom was asked if CAPI could do a formal investigation. Tom agreed and asked Pat to set up the investigation.

The team arrived at 19:00. We were greeted warmly by the client and were invited to make ourselves at home. Matt was Investigation Lead during this visit and asked Tom to take some initial temperature and compass readings in the living room where some activity had been reported. Matt then began going over our Questionnaire with the client. We found that many unusual things had happened over the years in this home - footsteps through the second floor hallway (when no one was there), the son being called by a parent and the parents being called by the son (neither had done so), the smell of pipe tobacco (no one smokes), items missing for days or weeks only to be found where they were last placed, etc. The team was intrigued.

Matt asked Tom to begin on the second floor while he proceeded to the basement. Before going upstairs, Tom checked the standing thermometer in the living room to see if there was any temperature fluctuation. Matt came in before going downstairs to see if the temperature had changed and decided to quickly sweep the area with the EMF detector. He got very unusual readings near the TV but not when the device was pointed at the TV (when pointed at an electrical device, a normal reading of 8 - 11 MilliGauss is considered normal). We decided to perform some tests with the TV on and off and found that, while the TV was on, the EMF would read high along the graduated scale from a point approximately half a metre in front of the TV to about 2 metres away. When the TV was off, the EMF did not register any anomalies. These readings only happened when the EMF was pointed in a particular direction (toward the basement stairs) and could not be replicated when pointed elsewhere.

Matt then went into the basement. He found high EMF readings throughout, but noticed them in unusual places. The stairs are made of wood but had high EMF readings. Also, the west and north exterior walls showed the same readings from floor to ceiling. Even the ceiling had high EMF. He checked all the accessible areas and found no electrical wiring to account for these readings. As he proceeded through the home, Matt found that the EMF readings were less as he went from floor to floor.

Meanwhile, Tom investigated the second floor. The client's son followed him and was a font of information about activity. Often, when the son is on the computer, one of his parents will call him downstairs. He goes to the stairway and asks what they want (in typical teenager style) but finds that they had not called him at all. This sometimes happens when he is home by himself. The son also related other times when he did not feel alone while doing homework or watching TV in his room. While in the home office, both Tom and the client's son heard one of the homeowners call to them. No one had. Then they went into the master bedroom and Tom felt that a missing item (a watch inherited from a grandfather) was in a drawer. He went back to the main floor, asked the client to come upstairs and open the drawer. The mother obliged, opened the drawer and found the watch that had been missing for several weeks was exactly where she had placed it originally. The other missing item from this drawer (a grad ring) was not found while we were there.

Matt and Tom met on the main floor. Matt asked Tom to take compass readings throughout the basement. Matt then went to the second floor to continue his investigation. Pat followed him. Matt felt unusually closed in while upstairs, especially in the main bathroom. He asked if any strange smells were ever noticed there, then began laughing. The client laughed too and noted that, while CAPI was taking this investigation seriously, she was glad we have a sense of humour. She told Matt that she had not noticed anything out-of-the-ordinary in this bathroom while Pat humorously disagreed. Matt then went into the master bedroom and felt drawn to the closet, specifically the top shelf. The EMF began reading unusual amounts of energy in the corner and he asked the client if she would be willing to remove the clothing on the shelf so he could take readings that were more precise. She complied and Matt found the readings did not change, regardless of his distance from the closet corner. It is possible that some type of wiring goes through this part of the wall.

Tom and the client's son went into the basement and Tom took compass readings and some photos. The son explained that he felt most uncomfortable in the basement because he never seemed to be alone. Tom's compass showed minor fluctuations near the exterior walls and higher fluctuations near the stairs. A few of the pictures taken in the family room area of the basement have orbs. The other sections of the basement did not seem to be as energized as the family room. The storage area under the stairs had a faint yet distinct litter box smell that was totally out of place (the client's are allergic to cats and dogs and have no pets nor did the previous tenant).

Matt and Tom met again on the main floor and Matt suggested they talk. They went into the basement and discussed their findings. The basement family room seemed to have the highest EMF readings in the entire home. They were unusual too, because concrete walls, ceiling tiles and wooden stairs should not produce any EMF readings. We hypothesized that there may be some sort of piping or wiring running through the concrete walls that may account for EMF. But we could not find any rational or logical explanation for EMF anywhere else. We felt that all the reported activity in this home is directly related to these Electro Magnetic Fields. How, exactly, we cannot say. However, we theorize that the high EMF is drawing various energy into the home and is making our client's more sensitive to this energy. Because the family has lived in the home for nearly a decade and have no serious health issues, we feel that the Electro Magnetic Fields are more an annoyance than a risk. The family is not bothered by the paranormal activity, they only wanted us to explain what may be happening in their home. A subsequent visit is not scheduled at this time.
